The Right to Landscape - Contesting Landscape and Human Rights (Paperback): Shelley Egoz, Jala. Makhzoumi, Gloria Pungetti The Right to Landscape - Contesting Landscape and Human Rights (Paperback)
Shelley Egoz, Jala. Makhzoumi, Gloria Pungetti
R1,606 Discovery Miles 16 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Associating social justice with landscape is not new, yet the twenty-first century's heightened threats to landscape and their impact on both human and, more generally, nature's habitats necessitate novel intellectual tools to address such challenges. This book offers that innovative critical thinking framework. The establishment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, in the aftermath of Second World War atrocities, was an aspiration to guarantee both concrete necessities for survival and the spiritual/emotional/psychological needs that are quintessential to the human experience. While landscape is place, nature and culture specific, the idea transcends nation-state boundaries and as such can be understood as a universal theoretical concept similar to the way in which human rights are perceived. The first step towards the intellectual interface between landscape and human rights is a dynamic and layered understanding of landscape. Accordingly, the 'Right to Landscape' is conceived as the place where the expansive definition of landscape, with its tangible and intangible dimensions, overlaps with the rights that support both life and human dignity, as defined by the UDHR. By expanding on the concept of human rights in the context of landscape this book presents a new model for addressing human rights - alternative scenarios for constructing conflict-reduced approaches to landscape-use and human welfare are generated. This book introduces a rich new discourse on landscape and human rights, serving as a platform to inspire a diversity of ideas and conceptual interpretations. The case studies discussed are wide in their geographical distribution and interdisciplinary in the theoretical situation of their authors, breaking fresh ground for an emerging critical dialogue on the convergence of landscape and human rights.

Ecological Landscape Design and Planning (Hardcover): Jala. Makhzoumi, Gloria Pungetti Ecological Landscape Design and Planning (Hardcover)

R5,330 Discovery Miles 53 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on both research and practical experience,Ecological Landscape Design and Planning offers a holistic methodological approach to landscape design and planning. It focuses on the scarcity of natural resources in the Mediterranean and the need to aim for long-term ecological stability and environmental sustainability. The principles of this approach, therefore, can be used as a theoretical foundation for holistic landscape research, creative ecological design and better sustainable practice development.

Island Landscapes - An Expression of European Culture (Hardcover): Gloria Pungetti Island Landscapes - An Expression of European Culture (Hardcover)
Gloria Pungetti
R4,320 Discovery Miles 43 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Island Landscapes takes a critical look at the evolution of European islandscapes and seascapes to examine the conditions facing them in the twenty first century. Considering island landscapes as an expression of European culture, this book envisages future trends and presents clearly the need to find a balance between preservation and development to ensure sustainability. Both large and small islands are illustrated in the book including the British Isles, Malta and Cyprus as well as archipelagos in Norway, Italy and Greece. Their unique identities and values reveal the remarkable breadth of cultural heritage possessed by these diverse European islands. An interdisciplinary approach is applied to the history, perception, characterisation and planning of islandscape and seascape in Europe, to support culturally-oriented strategies for these fragile landscapes.

Mediterranean Island Landscapes - Natural and Cultural Approaches (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008):... Mediterranean Island Landscapes - Natural and Cultural Approaches (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Ioannis N. Vogiatzakis, Gloria Pungetti, A.M. Mannion
R5,793 Discovery Miles 57 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mediterranean islands exhibit many similarities in their biotic ecological, physical and environmental characteristics. There are also many differences in terms of their human colonization and current anthropogenic pressures. This book addresses in three sections these characteristics and examines the major environmental changes that the islands experienced during the Quaternary period. The first section provides details on natural and cultural factors which have shaped island landscapes. It describes the environmental and cultural changes of the Holocene and their effects on biota, as well as on the current human pressures that are now threats to the sustainability of the island communities. The second section focuses on the landscapes of the largest islands namely Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus, Crete, Malta and the Balearics. Each island chapter includes a special topic reflecting a particular characteristic of the island. Part three presents strategies for action towards sustainability in Mediterranean islands and concludes with a comparison between the largest islands. Despite several published books on Mediterranean ecosystems/landscapes there is no existing book dealing with Mediterranean islands in a collective manner. Students, researchers and university lecturers in environmental science, geography, biology and ecology will find this work invaluable as a cross-disciplinary text while planners and politicians will welcome the succinct summaries as background material to planning decisions.
